Garden Cost Estimator

Pick a project and quantity for a realistic low/high budget range.

In one sentence: Garden Cost Estimator is a budget estimator: it takes a project type and a quantity and returns a low-to-high cost range rather than a single number.

Lumber, soil, hardware; DIY low end, kit/cedar high end. Range is a U.S. planning estimate (materials, DIY); professional labor is extra. Get local quotes for big jobs.

What the inputs mean

Choose the project and enter the quantity you are planning. The tool applies a low and a high unit cost to that quantity, which is why the answer is a range — the spread represents the difference between the cheapest workable option and a comfortable one, not uncertainty in the maths.

How to act on the answer

Plan against the high end and be pleased if you land below it, because garden projects reliably grow: soil amendments, irrigation, and season extension are the items most often left out of a first estimate. The largest single variable is usually whether you build or buy — a raised bed built from lumber and filled with bulk soil costs a fraction of the equivalent number of filled bags or a prefabricated kit.

What this tool cannot know

The unit costs are retail estimates, so regional pricing, delivery charges, and bulk-versus-bagged purchasing can move the total substantially. It estimates inputs, not labour, and it does not include tools you may still need to buy for the project.

Where it fits in the season

A calculator is only as good as the location data behind it, so two other pages usually belong in the same session. The ZIP lookup establishes your zone and typical frost dates, which is the baseline that garden cost estimator is reasoning from, and the monthly zone checklists turn the same baseline into an ordered set of jobs for the current month. If you are working from a specific planting plan rather than a blank bed, the garden plan templates carry published spacing and crop lists you can feed straight into the planner.
