Composting for the Garden
Turn kitchen and yard waste into garden gold. Balance your pile by carbon-to-nitrogen ratio and see the CO2e you keep out of the landfill. All inputs use labeled, literature-based values.
Compost Do / Don't Checklist
- ☐Greens (nitrogen): vegetable & fruit scraps, coffee grounds, fresh grass, manure
- ☐Browns (carbon): dry leaves, straw, shredded paper, cardboard, wood chips
- ☐Aim for a balanced pile — roughly 2–3 parts browns to 1 part greens by volume
- ☐Keep the pile as moist as a wrung-out sponge and turn it for air
- ☐Leave out: meat, dairy, oily food, pet waste, diseased plants, weeds gone to seed
- ☐Chop large items and mix greens with browns as you add them
